Yes, finally! Sara Weir Photography is undergoing HUGE changes. Meaning we're building a website! It has been something I've been wanting for years, but between having two kids, moving three times, and restarting my business three times it hasn't exactly been on the top of the list. But now it is! And I'm loving that it's all coming together. So much in fact that I can't wait to show you everything all at once so I'm unveiling the new blog! That's right! Go check it out!

And we're so happy she is!

The most wonderful part of having her home is watching these two together. This image is just one of many. Each morning M runs in searching for her baby. As soon as she finds her she squeals in delight and can't sit still until she's in her arms. They'll lay like this until mommy or daddy decides it's time for breakfast. Little C graciously accepts every kiss and every pat her sister gives. They are treasured mornings.

I should have made some kind of announcement months ago, but I'm just not the announcement type of person. It's not because I'm not excited - quite the opposite. I think it's because I like quietly pondering on such a happy thing. Maybe these images can convey a little of what I mean. The sweet secret of a whole new life; her's, mine, and ours.

However; seeing as there is going to be a new little person making frequent appearances here, there should be some kind of warning. Even if it is a late one.

Aren't they just beautiful!? You'd never have any idea of all the silly things I said to them while we were on this shoot. Honestly I love taking photos of my friends (and family) more than anyone else. I think it's because I know them before hand and so when I get to see something new, something more special as I view them through the lens. That makes it sound maybe more important than it is, but I'm grateful for the chance I had to see these two. They're just wonderful. I miss them terribly. But I'll see them again shortly!

And most of all I love the family.

Summer time equals family time. Family reunions, family picnics, family vacations, and most of all quiet evenings spent in the backyard with family. It means sticky faces and fingers. Cool popsicles and sprinklers. It means lots of hugs and kisses. And familiar faces we don't get to see everyday. It means a slower paced life with more time to spend giving hugs and kisses. It means fresh memories and happy moments. Summer time is a wonderful time. It's a special time ... it's family time.

We met when I was three and a half. She completely filled my arms - I didn't think she was so little. She cried at night, but I loved to play with her during the day. She asked me to cut her hair and got me in trouble when I did. She played barbies the way I wanted to play for hours and hours. She traded me a dollar for a penny. She stayed awake with me at night when I was scared. She listened to my nightmares as well as my dreams. She never called me stupid and always let me wear her clothes. She understands me and I understand her. We're different but we're also the same. She can comfort me and make me laugh. She's my beautifully talented best friend - I get to call her sister.

little brothers

This is my younger brother. My "little" brother. He's 6'2" ... I'm 5'2".

He came to visit me in the city just before we moved. It was a fun couple days. We talked about lots of the things we did together as kids. He's nine years younger than me so those stories mostly included things I did to him. Like putting him in our dresses or tickling him to death. And while I was definitely a tease I remember sweet things about him too. I remember how mom decorated his nursery with teddy bear wallpaper. I remember going in and waking him up to play. And I remember how much he loved his swing and how I'd sit there and watch him. And I remember when he learned to walk and we'd put him in my sister's jean skirt. He thought he was so special. We thought he was the cutest. I remember how chapped his cheeks always were. And I remember his silly little tummy and how ticklish he was. He's always been so much fun. But because I moved away when he was just nine he's always been such a little kid to me. Even when he grew taller than me or could lift more than me I always thought of him as my little Davey. Now I still call him Davey, but he's not so much that little ruddy cheeked boy. Instead he's strong and tall and old! And I loved that I had the chance to see him through my lens. All six feet two inches of him! I kept saying I wished he could just bend down or something so I could get above him! Love you Davey. Have a great Senior year.

anniversaries

I have had quite a few couples contact me over the past few months for photos celebrating their Anniversaries. And I absolutely LOVE this type of session! They are very different from an engagement session. They have a deeper quality for me. Maybe it's because of the trials these couples have faced together making their love deeper, richer, and more experienced. They are more comfortable with each other and I love the affection they show for each other. And when I catch that twinkle in their eyes I can't help but see how they fell head over heals for each other. In that moment their love is fresh and new. When I see those moments I can't help but I can't help but remember my own engagement session with all those emotions right on the surface. I just LOVE it!! Hope you enjoy their sneak peek!

What to Wear

The hardest part of getting pictures taken can be finding what to wear. There are so many choices and so many people to dress! But it doesn't have to be that way. Actually it can be a very FUN part of your session!

Clothes, aka styling, for your shoot is a powerful way to take your session from cute snap shots in a pretty place to a full blown portrait. Wear to start? Color, I always recommend color! It sets the tone and can bring warmth, spunk, and interest to your portraits. White also has a place in setting the mood. I LOVE a white dress. It conveys innocence in a classic way. Black ... it may be slimming, but honestly not flattering in photos. That is; however, my opinion. As with any rule I'm sure there is an exception, but until I see it I will stick hard and fast to my rule of ALWAYS choose color.

That being said there are a couple colors that should be kept in moderation! First, orange. LOVE orange. But family pictures with dad wearing a bright bright orange polo, mom in an identical orange jacket, and kiddos with more solid orange is definitely too much of a good thing! Hot pink, anything neon, and of course black all fall into this category as well.

The importance of color being established there are two ways to attack assembling the ensembles. The first way is to choose two colors. Just two. It keeps things simple. Here's the perfect example. I chose blue and purple. All outfits from this sample are from gap.com in case you're interested.

The two colors, however, do not all need to be exactly the same shade of your color. If you notice there are a couple variations of blue, but they are within the same tone and feel of blue. Same with the purple. And, as is always a good idea, there is a neutral that accompanies the two colors. It happens to be denim in this case.

The best tip I have for this type of approach is to not feel that you have to have each person in both colors. Or that each person needs to be in the solid color. Break it up. Have one solid (mom) a pattern that incorporates both (dad and brother) and a couple pieces that just work (sister and baby girl). It's not too matchy matchy (everyone wearing solid denim) but still looks casual and cohesive.

Which brings up another question - patterns. Avoid tiny hypnotizing checks or stripes. They blend together and look weird in photos. Likewise very large patterns can draw more attention to one person than another. Patterns are perfect for layering. Put a busy shirt under a jacket or cardigan. Then the color can peek through without being distracting.

The second approach is to choose a certain tone or feel for your colors. I recommend this approach especially for couples. It's much more interesting when you only have two people to have more color variety. The clothes for this are all from jcrew.com.

This approach is a little more difficult, but not necessarily. Here I picked a more formal look perfect for the fall. That does not mean that formal clothes make for formal portraits. It will just make for a different feel. And since I had cooler weather in mind I really tried to play up how layers add awesome dimension to photos. Try a scarf with a fun color, shoes with funky laces, or even fake frames to add a pop of color. Have a green pea coat? Or a long blue trench? Bring it! Even an umbrella, balloon, or favorite stuffed animal can add to your portrait. When in doubt bring it! Worst case scenario we don't use it.

Compare this shoot with this shoot. Both exhibit beautiful clothing choices. They both produced beautiful photos with two completely different feels.

I hope that helps give you some visuals for a good jumping off point for your own upcoming sessions. I LOVE styling shoots too! So if you have further questions always always ask! I've been known to accompany my clients on shopping trips or email suggestions! I want the feel of your photos to really reach that next level.

Just a Year Ago

You were so little. You needed me ... more than you do now. You ate every two hours. You couldn't walk or crawl. You had even less hair than you do now. The only noises you made were in your sleep or when you cried. I was so happy to meet you, hold you, love you. I was afraid you would grow up too quickly. The year has gone by more quickly than I ever imagined, but I find myself more enchanted everyday. Happy Birthday sweets!

Photography is ...

Depends on who you ask I guess. For me it's light, it's people, it's passion all wrapped up in a perfectly imperfect joyous package. However, somewhere along my photography journey I forgot that. Somewhere it became numbers, time, and mechanical. Somewhere I had collected a slight chip on my shoulder about how photography fit in my life. I didn't even realize that it happened. But then there was a small very short conversation. It wasn't even really about what was said but rather who said it. And it came from this couple. They are two of the kindest, most accepting, most giving people I know. She's a hair stylist who after hardly knowing me cut my hair for free. Maybe that doesn't sound like a huge thing, but when a haircut without the blow dry costs $50 it's no small thing. He's a model/photographer. During our short conversation he talked about the exciting things he was doing with his photography. As he described his upcoming projects I realized he used photography not only to build a career, but also to build people.

After we headed home I contemplated about my photography and how I used it. I compared my attitude with theirs and found mine lacking. I needed to take a new direction with my photography. It needed to be more personal and more about the people I was photographing. I tried to forget much of what I thought I knew and instead rediscover the joy. Instead of just looking through my lens I tried to see through my lens. Instead of taking poses at face value I try to find the people. The people deeply inside, and all their sides inside. I realize that yes I've worked and worked to take the photos I take, but now I appreciate more and more the gift it is. The perfect gift to feel so excited each time I pick up that camera. The gift to be that lucky one to see what I see and to click so everyone can see it. To see them. The ones you love and the ones who love you. It is something I can share, something I can give. Photography never was and shouldn't ever be about me. It's about those on the other side of the lens. And although I had forgotten it these most wonderful friends helped me to find that again. They truly are beautiful. In ever sense of that word. I'm so grateful for them being my friends and just being who they are! I hope you can see a little bit of what I see in these photos of them.

The business, the people, the fast pace, the grey winters, colorful spring and fall, and the muggy summers. There's not place like it. I remember when we first moved here. I had this tiny little baby that I carried everywhere in a baby bjorn schlepping bags and bags of necessities as we set up the apartment. I'm still not exactly sure where we put all those bags considering our apartment is only 400 square feet. Nothing has been what I expected. I thought I would love all the urban jungle and concrete everywhere, but honestly the park is my favorite place to go. I thought New Yorkers would be so annoyed with me every time I brought my baby on the subway. But they are always so nice. They help me with my stroller and they smile at Mara like crazy. In fact I think they're nicer to me because I have her with me. I've been driven crazy by this city and I've also had so many wonderful moments. It's an experience I won't soon forget.

One of the unexpected bonuses of living here has been all the amazing locations I've been able to shoot. I don't think I've shot in the same location twice! Surprisingly this location has to be one of my favorites! The Brooklyn Bridge so perfectly captures the feel of the city. If anyone is coming to visit anytime soon I definitely recommend walking it. But how to shoot on it is tricky because there are a million people on it at all times of the day. So ... I called this couple with a crazy idea - to shoot at 6AM! I really didn't think they'd go for it, but they totally jumped at it! There's something so magical about morning shoots. The light is different than at sunset. It's calmer and more blue. And as the sun rises it's so fun to play with the harsher light. It makes the colors stronger and the moments have an edgier feel. Which was so perfect for this shoot. I just had such a wonderful time shooting this couple! They were beautiful, happy, and so willing to try anything I asked of them! Thank you both so so much for getting up so early! You are my heroes!

Our Story

I love these pictures of us on the beach. I think they say perfectly how our family is. Mara, of course, in every shot. And, also of course, in the center. I love how these shots are so in the moment. Not one of them posed. I love that my jeans are rolled up evenly and how Mara's face is dirty from trying to eat the sand. I love how relaxed we are. I even love the funky angles and odd crops. They are not perfect portraits by any means, but they tell a story. They show us as we are everyday. They show how happy we are together. They show, the story of how imperfectly perfect our lives are.

Yesterday I sat on the couch watching some meaningless show on TV. It had been a normal day of eating, sleeping, and pooping. I was tired and then my world just changed. Mara came up to me and just put her little hand on my knee. I look down and she beams up at me. For no reason. So we sat there smiling at each other. It was beautiful. There really aren't words for what it meant to me. It was like that time when she was just a baby. So small, so sweet but then to my surprise she reached up and stroked my cheek with her little hand. Again, there aren't words for what that meant to me. I've often heard mothers say that their reward is found in those tiny moments. And while those moments are in fact tiny in time they are larger, more influential, and more rewarding than any other moment I have ever felt. No one tells you what the pay back is like. I thought it would be so small. But it isn't. It's great. So great.

That was a very sentimental lead into this beautiful family's sneak peek. But the whole point of it was that I can see that - that feeling of sincere happiness and reward that Mara gave me in those two moments on the faces of these dear parents. It is beautiful and expresses the most beautiful thing life has to offer - family.

Life is so many things. It's bittersweet, it's complicated, it's stressful. The days are long and sometimes the nights are longer. But Tuesday night gave me a break from all these things. Tuesday night was ... magic. The sum of all its parts created beauty. It is a shoot I will never forget! For many reasons! But I'll save that post for when I complete more of the images. Here is one for now!

This sweet little girl is a very lucky one. She got to come to two loving parents who wanted her very much. I love this family! They are so kind and inviting. They are such wonderful people to work with and a dream to photograph! Big sister already loves her little sister. I can't wait to see pictures of them as they grow up together as the best of friends. These two reminded me so much of me and my own sister. I was three, just like Ruby, when my sister was born. I have a picture of me holding her like the last one of these girls. I remember those feelings of "wow she's so big". She completely filled my little arms. But that was it, we've been thick as thieves since then. She's my best friend in so many ways. We're completely different but somehow the same. I wish the same for these beautiful sisters. That they will love each other and be the best of friends! Congratulations to this very beautiful family!

Only three days

old!! The youngest newborn I've had the chance to photograph yet! Excluding Mara of course. He couldn't have been more perfect. After a few snaps with his older sisters he slept and slept and slept.

There are few things as wonderful as holding a sleepy newborn as they fall asleep on your shoulder. It is so sweet to feel their warmth and breath become deeper and warmer as they fall to sleep. And just when I think it can't get any better I get to lay him/her down and begin to photograph. I get to see the fuzz that still covers their shoulders. Get so close to their little lips, their fingers, their toes. There is nothing like it. Whenever I do a newborn session I completely understand why a photographer would specialize in newborn photography. There are few things better!

In our short four (soon to be five) years of marriage Mr. Weir and I have moved a grant total of six times. To my grandma's for a short month just after being married, to Sacramento, to Grenada where we lived in three different apartments, and to New York. And we're moving for at least one more year to Sacramento.

Admittedly this move is bittersweet. I've always wanted to live in New York and I'm finally starting to feel like I understand this city. I get the lots of people everywhere all the time thing. I get the concrete jungle with its crazies. I get the subway and I get the miles and miles of walking. I even get the Barnes and Nobel fetish. But mostly I get the parks. I get the trees and the Ramble that winds through it. I get walking eight long blocks to get there just to feel like you're breathing fresh air. I get laying out in a bikini there just to feel the sun. And I not only get the great lawn, but love it. I love the bridges and all the new things I see each time I go there. I get the parks. Nothing compares to Central Park. Probably just 'cause nothing compares to New York. Therein, among other things, lies the bitter.

Then I pause and realize, I have yet to get the schlepping. And I taste sweet!

Sweet is the reality of not only living by but with family. The sweet is in evenings spent by the pool being splashed by those you love and love you back. The sweet, when I think of it in this way overwhelms the bitter. It is a most delicious sweet. It is ... going to be a bittersweet, but mostly sweet move.

Confession 1: I get nervous before my shoots. Not nervous because I don't know what I'm doing. I get the good kind of nervous. Like standing in the wings right before going on stage nervous. It's the anticipation of experiencing IT. IT being that sweet moment when it everything comes together. The perfect expression, the right angle, the best energy, and the click as the shutter freezes the moment in time. There's nothing else like it.

Confession 2: I have a new love. A new appreciation, and perhaps a new obsession. There is nothing sweeter than a squishy sleepy newborn. This little guy curled up on me and slept and slept. It warmed my heart and made me remember my own squishy newborn. I couldn't help envying his hair though. Mara has yet to have that much hair on her head! He was just the sweetest most perfect baby boy. I love newborns!

Well I've had some wonderful comments and emails about that last post. I've reached two conclusions. 1) I guess "people (do) love stories" and 2) While I don't have to spell it out every post I should write some of the story. I'll do my best! If it get's to be too much feel free to let me know!

This little girl is the sum of all my heart. She fills each and every crevice of me.
I am rewarded a hundred times a day for caring for her. In her smiles, her dimples that she gets from her daddy. As her small hands move over my face. I want to savor every moment with her. I want to imprint every part of her in my memory. I can't ever take too many pictures of her. Her teeth, her cheeks, her hands, her toes. All of it makes up my definition of perfection.

I am so completely in love with her. Whether she's practically jumping up and down because I've come to get her from her nap. Or she's crawling after me because I've gone into the bathroom (four feet from her). I can't ever get enough of her babble or her laugh. I know everything there is to know about her and she knows lots about me. We make a good team. We are good friends. We are the world to each other.

I wasn't prepared for the love. I was prepared for the dirty diapers and the sleepless nights, but not the love. Motherhood has brought me inexpressible joy. I didn't know what I was missing!

I recently read that in order to be a good blogger you can't just post pictures, but you also have to write. "People like stories" is what it said. And although I'm sure that's true I just can't make myself write anything. For me, words often take away from the pictures. I don't want to tell you what to think about them. Instead I want you to experience them. Soak them up. Let them take you where I've been and what I've seen. Hopefully the images tell a story themselves and you don't need a play by play.

It is also my hope that you can feel and see the love I have for the things I photograph. Yes, even people I hardly know. Because as we interact and open up to each other I always always see something so beautiful. So I'll let these faces and places speak for themselves and keep the words to a minimum. Hopefully you can enjoy the world I see and get to know me a little better through them.

Bodacious Babe

'Cause that's what she is! We met when we were 16 at a summer ballet camp where she asked to use my character skirt. I didn't know who she was at the time, but lent her the skirt thinking I would never see it or her again. Not that I cared, Character dancing was NOT for me.
Fast forward a couple years later. I'm looking at apartments for my freshman year of collage with a friend. This friend says she knows of someone who is looking for roommates. We walk in and look who it is! This tall, beautiful, bodacious babe! We've been close friends ever since. I like to think we know each other inside and out. She's my buddy, my chum, my Megra!

I had a fun time processing this one. I was chanelling the toy holga camera. It's definitely overdone for print, but I really had a good time just playing around in photoshop.

Spring has Sprung

I know I said it before but let me say it again! I LOVE spring. Never in my life have I enjoyed this time of year this much. I've always loved the fall, but I think spring has won a higher place in my heart. I can't get enough of all the flowers, sweet smells, and new life I see everywhere. Central Park has become my second home. Here are just a few of the pictures I've taken.

I always feel an immediate kinship with any fellow gingers. Maybe it's feeling like a minority or knowing that we share the specialness of freckled skin and red hair! Whatever it is I definitely love these two! Such a sweet pair! Thanks girlies for a fun morning!

All Finished

The past thirty days have been ... a wonderful challenge.

It was hard to pick up my camera everyday. Not to take a picture, but to realize that not every picture I take with it needs to be portrait quality. If the light isn't absolutely perfect it's ok. Or if there's stuff in the background it's ok. Or if the clothes aren't cute it's ok. Because I found that I love those moments and those images just as much as the 'perfect' ones. And I found that those beautiful images tell the story of our life. And it's the story I want. The REAL story. Not just the monthly picture perfect moments, but the loud, crazy, spontaneous moments. I think it's something I need to do every year. Because I grew. And that was the point.

the story: Mara loves looking at herself in the mirror. She'll push her little head forward until her forehead touches the glass. She'll smile and coo at herself getting so excited. We found this little toy (it has a mirror on one side) and she loves it. I think it's for a much younger baby, but Mara can't get enough. I love that she loves to play with it and is just so happy.

the story: This is where we go to church. Everyone that's been to visit has commented on how it doesn't look like our typical LDS building. That's because it was built by the temple comity so it looks more like a temple. I think it's just beautiful. I love the round windows and the steeple. The property used to actually be a half way house but they tore that building down and built the church in it's stead. Everytime I walk past it I admire it.

the story: See we three, now there are three. I've been reading way too much Dr. Seuss. Just us being us on the bed. It's our favorite place in the whole house. Mara's in particular. Second only to the bathroom where she can splash in the tub. We are often on the bed just laying there talking or playing. It's those happy quiet moments I hope I can remember.

the story: This shot is definitely a snap shot. It's not art by any means, BUT get a load of that face. To me it says everything about little Mara - super super happy to be alive. I mean I wish all it took to make me happy was a huge chunk of watermelon. Her eyes got so huge as her dad gave it to her. Then she looked to me like "what do I do with this mom?" Then like everything else it went straight into her mouth. Mmmmm it must have been good 'cause the kid finished the whole thing. I didn't think she had it in her, but then again she is my daughter! Just love that face.

the story: just the usual evening stuff going on. Mara had eaten and taken a bath and now it was our turn to eat. Jayson was making something yummy and we were all just playing around waiting to eat it. Jayson called my attention to this shot and it had to be the one! Who needs a fish eye lens when you have an al-clad mixing bowl!?

This was an EARLY shoot! But definitely worth it. I grew up a morning person and now find myself wishing to go to bed early and sleep in late. But I definitely love the light when the sun rises. We had some beautiful light this morning! Not to mention a super fun family!

This family has been waiting very patiently for this! And FINALLY here it is. This girl is going to be so protected - with all three of her older brothers. Each one showed so much love for her as they held her. Each in such a different way, but so lovingly. It was neat for me to see and I hope shows in these photos.

the story: just the usual laundry day. I loaded the stroller with all the dirty clothes. Strolled down the block, loaded the clothes into the ... well you know how the laundry goes. Then I pulled out the camera to snap a few of the bumble. I've been thinking about her sitting in those baskets for a while. I think I'm going to have to try it again since it didn't work quite the way I wanted it to, but it's still cute.

It was so fun to see how everyone reacted to her in there. They all - and I mean everyone in the mat - lined up behind me cooing and clapping. They were doing everything they could think of to make her smile. I always get compliments on how cute she is, but today it was a little overwhelming. But she definitely didn't disappoint. She's such a ham!

And in case you're wondering, the little sweater was a handmade gift from a friend and I love it! The little hood is just the sweetest. And it makes her cheeks look even more cheeky.

the story: Saturday was the first day of spring and it feels like it here in the city! The weather was beautiful over the weekend. It's rainy now, but I guess that brings more flowers! Anyway, Mara and I were walking home from a friends and I saw these little guys pushing their way up. I can't explain the happiness they gave me. February was so dark and dreary that seeing some color was so refreshing. It was a moment where I had to stop and think on the miracle of spring!

the story: A few weeks ago some friends gave Mara two presents and a fabulous Italian meal, but the presents are more relative to this story. Anyway, they gave Mara the Dr. Seuss Foot Book and a stuffed animal of the main character. Mara instantly fell in love. She giggles and squeals and squeezes him whenever she sees him. He will keep her entertained with his feet, ears, tail, and tag for twenty minutes! He also sleeps with her and helps her to wake up happy. Basically he's her bestest bud. I called him Foot or her little guy, but it was Auntie Annie who came up with Chester the Cheeto. I hate the name, but now every time I see him that's the name that comes to mind so I guess it's staying. And how can you NOT think of a cheeto when you see him? Seriously! So here's the bumble and her Cheeto!

the story: It was so fun for me to watch these two this week. Bumble loved watching her cousin every chance she got. She was particularly interested when he had a binkey in his mouth! the story: I have a confession to make. This one wasn't taken on day 13, but I wanted to share it for this day anyway. Day 13 was a birthday. A very big very good birthday. the story: After spending the day walking to Central Park, shopping, and eating we decided to spend the evening in until Jayson mentioned Times Square. So we loaded up the babies and took off for another adventure. The night was beautiful. After living here for a few months we avoid Times Square like the plague. Just too many touists and people. But this night was just beautiful. It was so fun to look in all the stores and just hang out. The colors were beautiful and the rain reflected them all back making them even more vibrant.

Later we went to Chevy's and the bumble had her first fresh tortilla, salsa, pina coloda, beans, and rice. It was a big night for her :)

Brief Interruption

I'd like to briefly interrupt the challenge to give this couple their sneak peek. I'm not sure it's really a sneak peek since there are so many pictures, but I just liked so many of them.

I had such a good time on this shoot. It was such a treasure to meet and chat away with this couple. After just a few minutes we chatted away like old friends. And they were so awesome! They lugged a suitcase all the way from Coney Island so we could have lots of outfit choices! They were so willing to wit anywhere and do anything. It was pretty windy in the beginning and standing around in a spring dress in 30 degrees wasn't easy, but they were fabulous! There were so many great pictures from this shoot and I'm sure there will be more to share!

the story: Today was beautiful - the sun was shining, not a cloud in the sky, and absolutely everything I needed after a cold, bleak, yucky February. So I took Mara and we spent the entire afternoon in the park. It was about 50 - and I didn't know it was possible but I took the jacket off and wore just my t-shirt!! For a while anyway. It was heaven!

So we pushed our way downtown and saw the Boathouse which is on the little pond that you can rent the boats with peddles and peddle around on the water. Just a little past that is the Bethesda Fountain. I was a little unimpressed by the fountain itself, but I loved the arches that stand right in front of it. They are absolutely beautiful. But even more beautiful was the music that came from the double bass under the arches. There are always musicians playing all over the city, but today I was so touched. The music he played was breath taking. After listening for a while Mara and I went up to thank him for the beautiful music. He thought she was so cute and after she giggled at him he played a piece specially for her. He said it was the only one written for little babies. And he let me take a few pictures of him. I was again touched by the warm hearts I find all over this city. Such beautiful people in unsuspecting places.

Then Mara and I sat and ate puffs and played in the sunshine surrounded by beautiful live music and our fellow New Yorkers. It was a perfect day for me. Absolutely perfect.

the story: this one LOVES her bath. Quite often she'll get in the tub twice a day. Once just because she is grumpy and it entertains her and again to clean up after dinner. She loves to tickle her toes and play peek-a-boo in her towel. Tub time and towel time are some of my most favorite moments in the day. So much so I couldn't pick just one!

the story: I've always loved these windows. I chose this shot because to me it shows the convergence of two worlds. Awesome Way to Showcase

Sometimes the hardest part about pictures (after the sifting through and deciding which ones to order!) is figuring out the best way to showcase them in your home. I'm so excited about how many alternatives to just framing there are out there at the moment. There are canvases, floating wraps, fine art prints, and countless ways to mount your prints. Prints can come in so many custom sizes as well. And while I love a beautiful gallery frame display I have to say I have fallen in love with the frameless print. Not only do they have a clean modern feel, but the cost of mounting a large print verses framing it doesn't even compare! I love the look of a huge canvas above the bed or fireplace, but if a canvas isn't in the budget mounting your print and adding a linen texture can be a beautiful and economical alternative.

I recently had a client (you'll probably recognise the pictures of this sweet family from this post) order several fabulous large prints mounted various ways to display at home and in the office.

This idea takes image display to whole new level. The collage is such a unique way to display multiple images. This collage was mounted with a linen texture to keep it frameless. I just love how long and narrow it is. It would be so so perfect in a hallway or hanging low over a couch.

This photo demonstrates only two of the five types of mounting. As you can see there is a wide range of thicknesses available.

And then finally here are just a few ideas of what you could do with a frameless print. I'm telling you the possibilities are endless!

Over the holidays we headed home to family. It was the first time my M was really aware of her cousins. It was so fun to watch the way she handled their love and attention. She loved it! Especially from this little guy. He always wanted to hold her and even take naps with her in the crib! Caught them together there playing peek-a-boo instead of sleeping even!

I just loved watching them together and I thought it would be fun to start sharing a few more of my own personal pictures here to maybe help people know who I am and perhaps shed a different light on my work. Thanks for looking!

This beautiful little present did a wonderful job posing for his pictures. He was awake most of the time, but that made for sweet little pirate faces! He did sleep a little at the end, but mostly we just wore him out so he could take a fabulous nap after we were finished!

I'm not sure where to begin! This family was so fun to photograph and they were up for absolutely anything, as you will see. I loved that they were willing to give me a serious pose of "the bloods" (just siblings and parents) and yet were fun enough to jump over and over again! So thank you Busaths! You were just awesome! On a side note, I've often heard photographers say they do not enjoy large groups because they find it more difficult to be creative. And while keeping that many people interested in you is a challenge I have to say I felt very creative! I'd love to shoot a large family again asap! Any takers??

They warned me and I thought I knew, but it slipped through my fingers. Time, that is. I grew up with brothers much much younger than me. I really thought I understood what it meant to watch a baby grow and change over a few months. But as I watch my own baby grow I realize I didn't have a clue. At a whopping 15 lbs she's tripled in size and personality. I can hardly remember the days when she looked like that first picture. So small, so sleepy. It makes me glad that I skipped the needed nap to snap a few.

I was finally able to convince someone to schedule an early morning shoot! And I'm so glad we did, the light was just beautiful. I love the light in the morning. There's something magical about the quiet (a rarity in the city). I love watching everything wake up. And that morning especially. The air was crisp and everyone was cheerful. It provided the perfect atmosphere for this family shoot. Not to mention that these two brothers were so sweet with each other. They ran around 'their park' and were so great to work with. Color Management

On of the most wonderful, horrible, frustrating, and technical parts of photography has to do with color management. Each computer monitor, just like every TV, displays color slightly differently. This presents a problem for any photographer. What you see on your screen is probably not what everyone else sees on their screen, especially when it comes to the internet. Likewise printers interpret color differently, so what you see on your monitor is not neccessarily what the printer will print, professional printing or otherwise. So, color management becomes a necessary part of photography particularly with digital photography.

To control the color I see on my monitor I calibrate my monitor with a little piece of hardware that reads the light output and color once a week. This keeps my editing more consistent. But what about the web and it's color? This is probably the most frustrating part of photography. My photos look great on one monitor and horrible on the next. There is a solution! Friefox3 has a color space awareness feature that you can turn on. This allows you to see the true color in photos. Give it a shot and see if it makes the photos look better or worse!

Here's How:

1. In your firefox web browser type - about:config
2. A box will pop up asking you to promise to be careful, click yes.
3. Type - color_management - in the filter
4. Change gfx.color_management.enabled to true
5. Then close out of Firefox and restart it

Your colors should be different. Let me know what you think - good change, bad change?

This was seriously such a rewarding shoot! It has been so much fun getting back into my photography swing. With each shoot I just remember how much I love capturing people! And this family was especially fun because they were the first family that ever let me practice on them! That's right - when I first bought my little rebel they went out to the beach with me and we took tons of pictures. Unfortunatley I had the white balance set to tungsten - granted this was before I really understood what the heck which balance was - and botched just about the whole shoot. Ack! Luckily this time I know a little more about photography and that didn't happen. So thank you for trusting me to take your photos again!! You're wonderful!

These three beautiful ladies were awesome!! We went into downtown St George's Grenada and they modeled like pros! They focused and didn't let the whistles, smooching noises, or 'hey baby' calls deter them. And we were out there for quite some time. About three hours I think. Anyway, thanks girls for a seriously killer morning!

Traveling Family of Three

This beautiful family flew into Grenada for a couple days vacation. I was lucky enough to snap a few shots for them. Their poor little one was sick from the travel, but he did a phenomenal job in his pictures. I love the one - the last shot of the shoot - with his head on mom's shoulder and his smile of relief that it was all over and he could finally sleep! Thanks so much you guys for a wonderful shoot!! Hitting the Waves

One day a year the waves are big enough to merit good surfing in Grenada. Some friends and I headed down the coast to see what kind of photos we could catch. We found a wonderful Grenadian lady who was willing to share her porch with us while we shot. It provided a fabulous view and sheltered us from the drizzling rain.

Kay was so beautiful to photograph. She was a wonderful model too! I've sat on these photos forever! But it's been so fun to pull all these shoots out of old folders and work on them! Wed in Grenada

These are photos of a good friend of mine down here in Grenada. She stopped by one night in the middle of a practice photoshoot! She kindly agreed to go home, put some make-up on, and run back just in time to pose! Then some genius came up with the idea to tie our comforter around her as a make-shift wedding dress. It was a crazily wonderful good time. Thanks so much dear friend and secret genius!! I love these shots!
